Annually, as many as 3.5 million athletes will sustain concussions. This is an unavoidable risk that athletes accept in order to compete in the sports they love. After an individual sustains a concussion; doctors, coaches and training staff are often left to speculate about the player’s safe
return to competition. This type of injury management greatly increases the risk of the athlete experiencing a successive brain injury, even from light contact. This second concussion can be devastating, ending seasons, careers, and on rare occasions, can be fatal.
Outdated concussion management strategies relied on the subjective reports of athletes to determine when they were symptom free and when it was safe to return to play. Unfortunately, even if an athlete is symptom free, their brain may still be in a vulnerable state of recovery. In this state, they are at an extremely elevated risk toward experiencing successive and more serious brain injury.
The Sport Concussion Program utilizes objective technology that measures brain functioning to provide data driven decisions on when a brain has recovered and when it is safe to return to play.
The goal of this program is to provide comprehensive sport concussion management services through a 5 step program.
(1) EDUCATION
Education of athletes, parents, and coaches on concussion injuries
Information on signs and symptoms, course of recovery, appropriate treatment and care,
and integrating student athlete back to school after concussion
(2) BASELINE TESTING WITH ImPACT
Pre-season baseline neurocognitive testing
(3) SIDELINE EVALUATION
Education for team trainers, first responders, coaches, parents and administrators on identification and care of concussed athletes and when to remove from play
(4) POST INJURY CARE AND EVALUATION
Full clinical consultation clinical interview, collateral contacts (trainer, coach, team physician, etc.),
Post injury testing (ImPACT and other measures as needed),
Written report of findings and recommendations to physician and trainer
Phone and in-person consultation on as needed basis
(5) RETURN TO PLAY GUIDANCE AND SUPPORT
By providing a state-of-the-art, medically based program with clear guidelines that support timely and safe return to play, doctors, school administrators, athletic departments and families can feel greater confidence in these decisions
